Working out post-wax? Read this first

Updated: Sep 16, 2025

Did you know working out right after a wax (or even a day later) can really affect your skin and even cause ingrown hairs? If you didn't, keep reading, your skin will thank you later!

Waxing post-care

I have a whole post dedicated to pre and post wax tips that you can read here so I'm not getting too into detail much here. My general rule of thumb is to avoid anything that causes friction, sweating, or rubbing to your freshly waxed area(s) for 24-48 hours after your wax.

Applying Fur oil post-wax
Fur oil is a great post-care product. Available for purchase in my studio!

friction is not your friend

Friction right after a fresh wax, especially somewhere sensitive like a brazilian wax, can really irritate and upset your skin. Rubbing, tight clothing, or even getting too close too soon can lead to bumps, redness, and specifically ingrown friction hairs. The first couple days after a wax you want to wear as little and as flowy clothes as possible to avoid this. Sweatpants, shorts, dresses, skirts are all your friends during this time! If all of this can happen just from friction, just imagine what happens when you add in the bacteria from sweating during your workout.

If you've been struggling with ingrowns or irritation post-wax and didn't know why, but you work out a day or 2 after waxing, you might have found your answer!

What should i do after a wax?

Basically nothing if you can help it! The less you do and more you leave your skin alone, the better off you'll be. I know lots of clients say they go home and go commando after a brazilian, and if that's your thing, go for it! It's definitely good for your skin post-wax. Same goes for legs, arms, underarms. Wearing shorts, tank tops, holding off on deodorant application, are all things that will allow your skin room to breathe and recover.

You should always feel comfortable asking your waxer (whether that's me or someone else) questions about what you can or can't do post-wax. If you're doing something a little out of the ordinary for you, it never hurts to ask!

Graphic showing needs being met. Middle of triangle says "Sitting in bed 3 days after your wax, when you've had your everything shower, lotioned up, with fuzzy PJs on, and are ready for an evening alone". The right side of the trianlge shows levels of "basics needs", "psychological needs", "self-fulfillment needs" being met
Holding off pays off! Enjoy relaxation time while you let your skin recover

In conclusion

Avoid working out or anything else that causes friction or sweating for the best wax results! This can also include going on a walk, running errands, going to work (if you walk/move around a lot), riding bikes, etc. The best thing to do is book your wax for a day off when you know you don't have anywhere to be or anything to do, and go home and put on comfy, loose clothes, and take it easy!
